A Simple Lesson in Business

January 22nd, 2008

Most people forget what business is truly about and all they think of are the high level principles that makes it lose its charm, its beauty.

Yes, I love business and the words I use to describe it may be unorthodox; but it’s all part of my philosophy to create businesses that bring real value to the world; and priceless, intangibles such as joy, connection, love, security to the customer to enhance their lives.

It’s all about exchange. More appropriately, it is about the exchange of what your business’ product or service will achieve for the customer, for money.

The real rewards lies in the sense of joy and contribution you make to your customers and it is something that is priceless, something that money cannot buy. However, realize that money is still important in business. The customer probably does not know what you want, so money is the universal unit they can use to repay you for all you have given them and allow you to fulfill your needs in your own way. I mean, you wouldn’t want to receive something such as a food processor when you don’t really need it, and even the customer would much rather give you something that you would need

If you don’t allow someone to give back for what you have done, it’s a selfish act. Simply giving and not accepting is bad; even if you already have everything you need.

Remember, people will be glad to give you their money in exchange for something that you have if you give them genuine value that enhances their lives. In fact, they would feel bad if you did not take anything from them.

So many people make the mistake of having the mindset filled with the goal of getting money rather than satisfying the customer. A little is good in business, but most of the time, there is so little focus on really creating the product or service that will deliver real value to the customers and this will of course bring about the opposite effect; where people would not feel like you deserve the money they had to part with.

Selling more to people and getting more money out of every customer is not a bad thing and in fact, quite the opposite. It simply means they have allowed you to give more to their lives and you’re actually contributing more towards making the world a better place. No, it isn’t an exaggeration. When people are in positive states such as joyous or secure, they naturally do better things and it simply brings about more positivity. It may be a long chain of reactions that result in that; but you just need to know that the impact you can make is much more significant than you think.

A truly good business will keep the customers coming back for more and marketing is only a tool used to let people know that you are out there to help them, and persuading them to allow you to help them - and that is when you can really shine and bring more to the lives of so many. This is a topic for another time.

Remember, business is about the fair exchange of money for value that deserves it.

A business that isn’t built on this principle will eventually die, because it simply cannot produce enough results to satisfy the customer and make him or her come back for more.
